2021-2022 Editorial Board

The Editorial Board is the club’s executive body. They have a wide range of responsibilities, and are all experienced student journalists who have basic accreditation from the Poynter Institute of Media Studies

  • Spencer Izen

    Spencer Izen - Editor-in-Chief

    Serving his second year as Editor-in-Chief, Spencer loves his role and likes to have a part to play in every aspect of the newspaper - planning to printing. He joined The Nest as a reporter in Grade 8. Spencer is one of the co-drafters of the BC Student Press Freedom Act, Canada’s first student journalism protection legislation, and is the Lead Youth Advisor & Researcher with the Canadian Institute for Information and Privacy Studies. Some of his interests include law, politics, aviation, STEM, coin collecting, and flight simulators (X-Plane 11!). His favourite part of The Nest is everything.

  • Hannah Azad - Executive Editor

    Hannah is grateful to be working alongside a team of young, driven journalists during her fifth year at The Griffins’ Nest. As a returning Executive Editor, she helps uphold the quality of the paper, and guides The Nest’s reporters through the article-writing and publishing process. Hannah’s growing interests in journalism, current events, and enthusiasm to mentor lend her to this positionon the team. Through The Nest’s ambitious projects, she looks forward to making a lasting impact on the Vancouver School District, as well as the community of student journalists across British Columbia.

  • Jessica Kim - Managing Editor

    Jessica, The Nest’s Managing Editor, is responsible for many of the paper’s operational functions such as the Instagram, advertising, and the layout & design of the newspaper itself. Her favourite part of The Nest is working with the incredible reporters and Editorial Board! Jessica is one of the co-drafters of the BC Student Press Freedom Act, a first-in-Canada law designed to protect student journalists’ rights. Jessica’s interests are journalism, law, graphic design, marketing, news, and fashion. She looks forward to making an impact on her community as a whole with The Nest.

  • Erika Chung - Executive Editor

    This is Erika’s fifth year with The Nest. Since joining as a confused eighth-grader, she’s grown as both a journalist and a person (+ 1 inch in height). At Hamber, she’s involved in Yearbook, Student Council and Hand in Hand (proud finger). Erika enjoys travelling and has been to many places, but her favourite cities are Paris, Tihany, and Seoul. The Nest sparked Erika’s interest in storytelling and journalism. She is the co-founder of Hey Stranger Vancouver, a photojournal blog inspired by Humans of New York. Erika is proud to be part of the Nest family, and cannot wait to share what’s to come.

  • Stephen Kosar - Executive Editor

    Serving his first year as an Executive Editor at The Griffins’ Nest, Stephen is incredibly excited to be working with an amazing team of journalists and students. Joining the newspaper last year, Stephen’s interest in journalism was sparked by the use of investigative reporting to provide accountability in a system. Some of his interests include journalism, law, business, politics, and skiing. Stephen looks forward to making an impact on his community with The Nest.
