Journalistic Commitment

On the front page of every issue, The Nest’s communicates its promise to readers:

The Griffins’ Nest is Eric Hamber’s student-led, independent newspaper. Publishing all year round, The Nest covers topics relevant to students and staff in an informative, impartial, and professional manner.

All articles are curated by the Editorial Board (with the exception of opinion pieces). Complaints may be filed through a form hosted on The Nest’s website.

The Griffins’ Nest subscribes to the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Principles for Ethical Journalism and Ethics Guidelines, and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics.

Editorial Policies

The Nest’s Reporter’s Manual & Editorial Policy Guide contains the publication’s editorial policies and guiding principles that inform its journalism. It was originally written by the Editorial Board in 2020, and is continually updated and reviewed based on a number of factors, including input from readers.

Besides editorial policies, the manual is also the club’s primary journalism textbook, covering topics including newsworthiness, the inverted pyramid, bias mitigation, interviewing. As a student-led organization, all journalism education is conducted by the Editorial Board.

Editorial polices have been consolidated because we believe that providing our handbook and our policies in tandem are equally important elements of demonstrating our commitment to journalism ethics to our readers.

All members are required to pass an Editorial Exam based on the content of the manual every school year they report for.

Those looking for editorial policies can click here or use the button below to access the manual.

We especially encourage Hamber students, the core of our readership, to access the manual if interested in learning more about media and journalism.

If you have questions regarding the manual, please contact us here. We are open to feedback should you spot an error or issue, and are willing to make adjustments based on external advice.
