Everyone dreads waking up on early mornings. Every school day, an alarm clock disrupts a peaceful sleep, and forces students out of bed, feeling irritable and unenthusiastic. To aid in this daily struggle is an unassuming, but all-powerful tool commonly used to prepare for the day — your favourite song blasting at full volume.
Music is an escape from a busy and stressful world that’s beloved by many students. From drawing on old favourites or jamming to new releases, many use music to get through the day.
“For me, listening to music as I get ready in the morning is a key component in ensuring I have a bearable day,” Mary Tran (9) said. “Currently my favorite song is “Crazier” by Taylor Swift. Listening to that song in the morning helps me feel good about myself and the day ahead.’’
From pop stars like Taylor Swift, to rappers like Drake, Hamberites have a variety of different music tastes. “Right now, I would have to say my favorite song is Headlines by Drake,” shared Isabella Prior (12). “It's a great song that always matches the vibe.”
In 2024, there have been many notable music releases that have quickly become favourites for Hamberites. The Secret of Us by Gracie Abrams blew up the charts and scored a Grammy nomination. Adaly Hoy (11) listened to the album on repeat, and says she particularly “ loved “Let It Happen”, especially when she sings it live [...] She sings the background vocals from the original song, which is really cool.”
Along with outstanding albums, many excellent singles were released in 2024. In February, Sza surprise released a song called “Saturn,” which quickly rose to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B Songs chart.
“I love this song […] it really caught my attention with the way [Sza] expressed herself in the lyrics,” said Mathieu Jung (11). “The contrasting instrumentals made the song feel [like] so much more than a normal song.”
For Aspen Milisavljevic (11), music is an essential part of her morning routine. “I love to listen to ‘DNM’ by Mk.gee when I’m walking to school,” she shared. “It’s got a great beat, and it makes me feel ready to get groovy.” Unfortunately, when the band came to Vancouver in September, their show was restricted to fans over the age of 19. “It was so sad, I cried,” Milisavljevic said.
Concerts are also a great way for students to enjoy their favourite music in a new and exciting setting. Since Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Vancouver has come to a close, many students are now looking forward to other concerts coming up in the near future.
Artists such as Tyler the Creator, Tate McRae, and Katy Perry are bringing their shows to Vancouver, and some Hamber students are lucky enough to attend. Baela Irving (9) is attending the Chromakopia World Tour in February. “I can't wait to go to [see] Tyler the Creator,” she said.
