Midtown Showdown’s Biggest Year Yet
Hamber’s Midtown Showdown (MTSD) was first hosted in 2011. Now, Hamber’s new building has enabled 24 teams from across the Lower Mainland to compete from Jan. 23–25. The event became a showcase for other groups. Dancers performed during halftime, the school band played by the bleachers at breaks, scorekeepers worked diligently from the sidelines, and the cheerleading club displayed their routines for the crowd. Hand-painted posters were hung up around the gym for the participating teams and each Hamber player.
Raptors Retire Vince Carter's Jersey
On Nov. 2, the Toronto Raptors will honor one of their most iconic players, Vince Carter, by retiring his jersey during a matchup against the Sacramento Kings. This occasion marks the first time a player’s jersey will be retired in the team’s history, and is part of a season-long celebration commemorating Vince Carter during the Raptors' 30th anniversary.
A New Era For Canadian Basketball: Toronto’s Prospective WNBA Team
Set to begin playing in the 2026 season, the newest team in the WNBA will be based out of Toronto. This will be the 14th WNBA team in the league, and the first one from outside of the United States.
ANALYSIS | A Draft for the Ages
On Apr. 15, the 29th WNBA draft took place in Brooklyn, New York, signalling the beginning of a new era in women’s professional basketball. Several star players from the National College Athletics Association (NCAA) put their names in consideration for the draft.

After hard-fought games, plenty of team bonding, and dozens of wins and losses, Hamber athletics put on quite a show this winter season. Enthusiasm from fans and players alike drove athletes in basketball, girls ice hockey, table tennis, and wrestling to success.
The Raptors Shake Up The Roster
The Raptors have made major changes to their roster before the trade deadline. Several new players have been added to the roster, and the only remaining player from the 2018–19 championship team is Chris Boucher. The Raptors have made multiple trades of star players and are hoping to rebuild to the level that they were once at.
Midtown SNOWdown
It’s uncommon for students to be disappointed by a snow day. After all, who doesn’t love to frolic in the snow? But for Hamber students and staff, this year's snow days weren’t as celebrated because they shortened the school’s most anticipated sporting event, the Midtown Showdown.
NBA Finals: Nuggets Win First Championship
After a 47-year championship drought, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat in five games to capture the Larry O’Brien finals trophy. The finals series came to an end on June 12 in Denver, with finals MVP Nikola Jokic leading the game in scoring with 28 points and 16 rebounds.
Hamber’s Basketball Teams Place Second and Third during Midtown
Hamber’s 12th annual basketball tournament, Midtown Showdown, occurred over three days from Jan. 19-21. Eric Hamber’s Senior Girls and Boys basketball teams, in addition to seven boys and seven girls teams across the Lower Mainland, played in the tournament. With 16 teams participating in total, the number of teams participating doubled compared to last year.
