Wildfires Blaze Through Chile, President Declares State Of Catastrophe
On Jan. 16, two dozen wildfires began to blaze large swaths of land across central and southern Chile, causing homes and forests to be destroyed, infrastructure to be irreversibly damaged, and at least 18 deaths. According to Chilean security minister Luis Cordero, 21,000 acres of land were burned and over 50,000 residents were forced to evacuate, as per The Guardian.
BC Records Its Second Worst Wildfire Season in History
This year’s wildfire season in BC was disastrous, with more than 1,362 fires and 886,348 hectares burned throughout the summer, according to the BC Wildfire Service. The season has not only left lasting damage across BC – it marks Canada’s second-worst wildfire season in history, rivaled only by the 2023 season.
Fort Nelson: The Powerline That Set A Town Ablaze
On May 10, Fort Nelson, a town in northeast BC, was put in danger by the Parker Lake wildfire. Over 4,700 residents were ordered to evacuate the area for more than two weeks before the fire was brought under control.
Wildfires in Maui
On Aug. 7-8, a wildfire burned down parts of Maui and the historical town of Lahaina. It was considered to be the largest fire in the United States in the past century, and led to 97 confirmed deaths and 31 missing people.
